The State Library of Queensland’s Margaret Lawrie Torres Strait Collection has been recognised on the Australian Register of the UNESCO Memory of the World program.

These stories were gathered from thirteen islands across the Torres Strait, located between Cape York in northern Queensland and the southern coast of Papua New Guinea. Despite almost a century of ongoing contact with European culture and ways of life, Torres Strait Islanders have maintained strong and continuous links to their traditions and history. Over four years, community members made a dedicated effort to share part of their heritage, captured through legends and myths, with readers both within the Torres Strait and beyond. This collection features colour illustrations throughout.

Margaret Lawrie was a teacher and researcher with a lifelong passion for child health, history and culture. Between the 1950s and early 1970s, she spent extended periods living in Torres Strait Islander communities, working closely with local families to record their stories, genealogies, languages and cultural traditions. Her work led to the publication of Myths and Legends of Torres Strait (1970) and Tales from Torres Strait (1972), and later became the foundation of the Margaret Lawrie Collection, held by the State Library of Queensland. This collection remains a vital resource for family history research and Native Title claims. Margaret Lawrie passed away in 2003, leaving behind a significant legacy in the preservation of Torres Strait Islander heritage.
