About Jessica Staines

Jessica Staines is an early childhood educator, professional speaker, author, advocate and advisor.

As the founder and director of Koori Curriculum, Jessica is committed to helping educators embed Aboriginal perspectives into early childhood education.

She has played many significant roles nationally and internationally in building cultural understanding, reconciliation and harmony, including as an Indigenous advisor to ABC’s Playschool.

Her work has been published in industry journals, and she has previously been a part of the AIATSIS Education Advisory Committee and HIPPY Reference group, contributing to the development of resources and programs that support Aboriginal children and families in the early years.

At Koori Curriculum, we deeply value the importance of cultural authority when it comes to teaching and sharing knowledge. Jessica Staines, as the facilitator of these workshops, does not claim cultural authority in communities she presents and works in.

These workshops are designed to provide overarching guidance, practical strategies, and frameworks that support educators in embedding Aboriginal perspectives in early childhood education. However, Jessica does not presume to teach local language, history, or cultural practices. Instead, she encourages educators to engage with local Elders, community members, and cultural leaders for in-depth understanding of their unique contexts.

Jessica’s approach is rooted in humility, and she spends a great deal of time referring educators to other relevant stakeholders where she feels it is beyond her expertise or cultural jurisdiction. The goal of these workshops is not to replace or override local knowledge but to offer strategies that support educators in their own journeys toward more inclusive, culturally aware practice.

Jessica has collaborated with peak bodies such as Early Childhood Australia, TVS Playschool, Reconciliation Australia, AIATSIS, and Be You, bringing a national perspective on Aboriginal pedagogy and reconciliation. However, it is essential that educators adapt these insights to suit their local context, ensuring that the work is always relevant, respectful, and rooted in the community.

We encourage all educators to engage in these workshops with an open mind and a commitment to listening to the voices that matter most in their own communities. The workshops are designed to complement and amplify local knowledge, not to replace it.
