Deadly Aboriginal Artist Series - Cyndy Newman

About Cyndy Newman

Cyndy Newman Kalare Woman of Wiradjuri Country Griffith and Condobolin is an artist, early childhood teacher and found of Facebook Group "Indigenous Perspectives & Cultural Knowledge".

Q: How old were you when you started painting?

I began painting when I was in Yr 11 back in 1996, as I studied Visual Arts as a major in high school.

Q: What inspires you?

My Children and Family. I am on another journey of finding more historical information about my families backgrounds and heritage.

Q: Who is your favourite artist?

Growing up I was always inspired by Arrernte man Albert Namatjira however now I am intrigued by the beautiful works of Art from Yorta Yorta man Lin Onus and Larrakia Woman Louise Numina Napananka.

Q: What advise would you give early childhood educators wanting to celebrate Aboriginal art in their art program?

I would strongly encourage educators to do research first. Find what type of art the children have an interest in. Understand that there is many forms of art and the options are unlimited. But there is something that I must highlight that is seen as tokenistic and its a very big No No when it comes to Aboriginal Art.

That is assuming every Aboriginal Artist uses dots... this is not the case, just look at the Artists that I am inspired by. This is why I encourage educators do the research first.

If early learning centres and educators want to celebrate Art then my biggest encouragement would be to purchase Authentic pieces directly through Aboriginal Owned organisations that you know all proceeds go back to the Artist and or the community it was created.
