Meaningfully embedding Aboriginal perspectives begins with knowing and listening to the local Aboriginal community. Without understanding local histories, cultures, priorities and protocols, educators risk relying on generic information or tokenistic activities that may not reflect the Country on which they work.
This webinar will support early childhood educators and leaders to build respectful, reciprocal and lasting relationships with Aboriginal communities. Participants will explore how to identify their local community, understand the different roles and organisations within it, and develop a practical community connections list.
The session will unpack important protocols for community engagement and consider what genuine consultation, collaboration and shared decision-making look like in practice. We will move beyond transactional approaches—where community members are contacted only when a service needs something—and explore how relationships can be nurtured through trust, reciprocity, consistency and ongoing participation.
Participants will also consider how social media and online networks can support connection, learning and relationship-building, while respecting cultural boundaries and appropriate protocols. The webinar will highlight practical ways services can create opportunities for local Aboriginal businesses, organisations, artists, educators and community members.
