Meaningful engagement with Aboriginal families is not about shining a spotlight on them, expecting them to speak for all Aboriginal people or asking them to carry the cultural load for your service. It begins with educators taking responsibility for creating environments in which Aboriginal children and families feel culturally safe, respected, represented and genuinely included.
This webinar will explore what cultural safety looks and feels like in everyday early childhood practice. Participants will consider how deficit assumptions and unconscious bias can influence relationships, expectations and decision-making, and how educators can approach difficult conversations with greater confidence, respect and cultural humility.
The session will also examine the purpose of Cultural Learning Plans and why they must be progressive, strengths-based and responsive to each child, rather than treated as a compliance exercise or “tick-and-flick” document. We will explore ways to invite family participation without placing pressure on families, tokenising their involvement or making cultural inclusion dependent upon their capacity to contribute.
Participants will be supported to reflect on on:
- creating culturally safe and welcoming environments
- recognising and challenging deficit-based assumptions
- sharing responsibility for cultural learning across the service
- developing meaningful and progressive Cultural Learning Plans
- navigating difficult conversations respectfully
- inviting family knowledge, perspectives and participation without expectation
- moving beyond tokenistic activities towards genuine embedding
- ensuring Aboriginal children and families experience authentic belonging and inclusion
This practical and reflective webinar will help educators strengthen relationships with Aboriginal families while recognising that culturally responsive practice is the responsibility of the whole service—not the burden of Aboriginal children, families or community members.
