Windows, Mirrors and Sliding Doors (Pre-Recorded Webinar)

Title: Individual Access

What messages do children receive about who they are, whose stories matter and where they belong?

Join Jessica Staines from Koori Curriculum to explore how everyday choices in our environments, resources and interactions shape children’s understanding of themselves and others.

Through the framework of windows, mirrors and sliding doors, this webinar explores how educators can offer children opportunities to see their own lives reflected, learn about experiences beyond their own and build meaningful connections through play, relationships and shared learning.

We will consider whose families, cultures and languages are visible in our settings, whose perspectives are missing and how to recognise representation that reinforces stereotypes. With a focus on Aboriginal perspectives, Jessica will explore the importance of contemporary representation, local community relationships and embedding culture throughout the year.

The session also examines how educators can respond when children notice difference, ask direct questions or encounter unfairness. Through practical examples and reflection, participants will consider how to support respectful curiosity, respond to discrimination and strengthen an anti-bias approach.

What educators will gain:

  • An understanding of windows, mirrors and sliding doors and how to apply the framework across the curriculum.

  • Practical prompts for reviewing books, resources, environments and everyday routines.

  • Strategies for responding to children’s questions about identity and difference without creating shame.

  • Ways to strengthen authentic Aboriginal representation through community voice and cultural guidance.

  • A clear starting point for making meaningful changes that support children’s identity, belonging and respect for others.
