"Serving Our Country: Indigenous Australians, War, Defence and Citizenship" by Joan Beaumont & Allison Cadzow
After decades of silence, Serving Our Country offers the first comprehensive history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in the Australian defence forces.
Although Indigenous Australians have served in the military since the Boer War, they often did so while defying racist enlistment restrictions—and were denied full citizenship rights upon returning to civilian life. In Serving Our Country, authors Mick Dodson, John Maynard, Joan Beaumont, Noah Riseman, Alison Cadzow, and others uncover the courage, resilience, and enduring trauma experienced by Indigenous defence personnel and their families. The book also traces the long fight for recognition of their contributions to Australia's military history.
