Keeping beaches safe for people to enjoy is so important for all Australians. Nipper programs can be seen on beaches right across our country. Nippers today are going to be our surf life savers of the future! Nippers is fun! It is a time to meet new friends, learn about community values and develop beach awareness to keep you safe in and out of the water. ‘I’m a Nipper Now’ is based on real life characters, six friends who meet on their first day of Nippers.

Mea is scared and not sure she wants to go to Nippers, but her new friends make her smile. There is nothing better than a day at the beach! This wasn’t just any normal first day of Nippers for Mea and her friends, someone was in trouble in the water! Mea knew that a lifesaver was needed very quickly, the boy was drowning! A real life beach rescue was happening in front of the Nippers’ eyes as they set out on their journey of a lifetime into surf lifesaving!

About the Author

Sally Cordner now resides full time on the surf coast in southern Victoria, Australia at Point Lonsdale where she grew up experiencing endless summer holidays with family and friends. Education brought her keen interest in literature and a passion for writing. Sally's career spanned time in education as a Primary Teacher inclusive of working with special needs children and roles in positions of responsibility.

Sally held a strong adeptness with Early Years, her most favourite interaction being sharing picture story books with young enthusiastic minds. Since moving to Point Lonsdale 5 years ago, Sally has had time to study and work on her writing combining her desire to share an aspect of life on the surf coast through children's eyes. Sally's first picture story book, I'm a Nipper Now, centers on her daughter's first day at Nippers.

About the Illustrator

Lucy Simms is a forever evolving artist whose works range from rough and rustic sketch water colours to hairpin detailed acrylic labours of love. Lucy is from Point Lonsdale, located on the South Coast of Victoria. Her life growing up revolved around the beach and sport; a nipper, surf life saver, swimmer and surfer.

Lucy has always had a passion for colour and creativity, studying graphic design through all her schooling years. A recent stint of living in Noosa provided inspiration for new learnings, new mediums and freedom to create without any of life's pressure. This is Lucy's first time as an illustrator for a children's book and she has focused on primary colours, bold references and real life beach scenes from her local Nippers Programs! Lucy has created unique piece of artwork for each page, trying to capture all those memories of her SLS days...
