"Silly Birds" By Gregg Dreise
In this humble, humorous morality tale, Maliyan, a wise and proud eagle, finds himself drawn into silly behaviours after meeting Wagun, a mischievous turkey. As Maliyan strays from the teachings of his Elders, the billabong community falls into disarray.
Realising the consequences of his actions, Maliyan must relearn the importance of respect, listening, and leadership. Through patience and example, he helps guide the other animals back to balance — except one who must learn in their own time.
“It’s hard to soar like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys.”
Blending First Nations values with universal life lessons, Silly Birds is a joyful and accessible story that resonates with children and adults alike. It encourages reflection on personal choices, peer influence, and the power of cultural teachings.
