"Going Bush" By Nadia Wheatley, Ken Searle (Illustrator)

“We should have harmony among people who live on this beautiful planet. We should make friends with people we don’t know. We should play, share and have trust with everyone.” – Mohammed

“I experienced the bush and I experienced life. I also found a brand-new way to learn and know new things.” – Christine

“I learned about ngurra, trees and plants, animals and Aboriginal people.” – Alban

In Going Bush, author Nadia Wheatley and artist Ken Searle guide sixteen students from diverse Sydney schools – Muslim, Catholic, and public – through an immersive Harmony Project in 2005. Together, they explored natural bushland and its cultural and ecological significance.

As the children built friendships and worked in harmony with one another, they also deepened their understanding of Aboriginal Country, knowledge, and land stewardship. The book features students’ own artwork and reflections, woven into a cohesive visual and written narrative that celebrates learning, diversity, and reconciliation.

This title is both a documentation of a unique education initiative and a beautiful classroom resource that promotes multicultural awareness, respect for Country, and environmental education.
