Transform Your Teaching Practice through embracing Aboriginal ways of knowing, being and doing.

Filmed in situ at Concord West Rhodes Pre-school this comprehensive course equips you with the knowledge, confidence and practical tools to embed Aboriginal perspectives meaningfully into your program, pedagogy and practice.

Led by Jessica Staines, Director of Koori Curriculum, this course addresses the real concerns educators face daily. Whether you're worried about causing offence, unsure where to begin, or seeking to deepen your existing practice, this course provides the framework and confidence you need.

Course modules:

The 8 Ways of Learning - Pedagogy in Practice: Learn about this transformative Aboriginal pedagogical framework through real case studies. See how topics like "heroes," "jellyfish," and "transporting schemas" become rich, culturally inclusive learning journeys.

Foundations of Reconciliation: Understand why embedding Aboriginal perspectives goes beyond compliance—it's about social justice, equity, and your crucial role in closing the gap. Learn to create culturally safe environments where Aboriginal families feel genuinely welcomed.

Reconciliation Action Plans and Commitment Statements: Be guided through creating personal reconciliation commitment statements that define what reconciliation means to you, how it manifests in early years settings, and your specific commitment to action.

Creating Culturally Inclusive Spaces: Move beyond surface-level inclusion with our comprehensive play space audit. Discover practical ways to reflect Aboriginal perspectives across all learning areas, from birth-to-two spaces to outdoor environments.

Including Aboriginal Art Respectfully: Discover the South Australian Art Gallery framework for respectfully incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art without creating copies, demonstrating through examples like ghost net sculptures how artwork can inspire diverse learning experiences from environmental action to scientific exploration.

The Fundamental Elements for Embedding Aboriginal Perspectives: Explore the four fundamental elements for authentic embedding Aboriginal perspectives and how schema play provides natural entry points for cultural inclusion with younger children, learning specific strategies for each schema type.

Navigating Celebrations and Significant Dates: Address the complexities around dates like 26th January with confidence. Learn to facilitate respectful team discussions and make informed decisions based on ethical frameworks, not personal opinions.

Sustaining Your Practice: Build lasting change with strategies for ongoing reflection, community engagement, and team collaboration. Join a supportive educator community for continued growth.

In this course, Director of the Koori Curriculum Jessica Staines will support educators to:

  • Explore Aboriginal pedagogies
  • Create reconciliation commitment statements
  • Develop a community connections list and understand the respectful protocols and processes for community engagement.
