Building on Jodi Edwards' previous book on language (Dharawal: Words, Phrases, and Activities, with pronunciations available at dharawalwords.com.au), this picture book serves as a primer for teaching the Dharawal language. Each sentence is presented first in Dharawal, followed by English, and is paired with engaging illustrations by Amy Hill.

The Ezy Books Series

Dr. Jodi Edwards, author of Dharawal Colouring and Counting and Dharawal Words, Phrases and Activities (illustrated by Merindah Funnell), has created a new series to support revitalization of the Dharawal language. This series includes 11 primary readers inspired by Jodi’s Staffordshire Terrier, Ezy, whom she “teaches” the language in each book.

The books are written as if Jodi is teaching Ezy his language—and therefore, his culture. Each book uses words that Jodi published in her previous works, now incorporated into sentences and phrases tied to cultural themes, such as the sea, birds, food gathering, rivers, colors, and directions. By 2025, the series will also include numbers, the Dharawal alphabet, and camp dogs.

To illustrate these stories, Jodi collaborated with renowned Aboriginal artist Amy-Lea Trindall Hill, whose characters are strikingly memorable and reflect a strong First Nations influence.

The books are bilingual, with each sentence in Dharawal followed by an English translation. Note that direct translations between Dharawal and English are not always possible, which can add an interesting challenge.

Jodi is currently working on a series of videos where she reads the books using a dog puppet. When complete, these videos will be available on dharawalwords.com.au.
